Top 30 Songs Of The Week - March 27 To 31, 2018

The Weeknd returning to his roots for new album

On Tuesday night (March 27), The Weeknd posted a screenshot on Instagram of a text conversation. The cryptic message reads, "Should we drop Friday? I'm indifferent to be honest." The ambiguous post has fans salivating at the sheer possibility that the XO crooner is ready to drop a new record or album, considering Friday is the day new music is traditionally released.
Sources tell Billboard that The Weeknd is in fact working on new material. "This project is Abel taking it back to his roots," reveals our source.

Rihanna Going Back To Loud Sound?

Rihanna is going back to her roots on her next album. The 'Work' hitmaker is reportedly planning to record songs in the style of her fifth studio LP, 2010's, 'Loud', which spawned the hits 'Love the Way You Lie', 'Cheers (Drink to That)' and 'Only Girl (In the World)', rather than 2016's R&B-orientated 'Anti'.
The record also saw the 30-year-old star collaborate with rappers including Drake, Nicki Minaj and Eminem. An insider told The Sun newspaper: "Rihanna loved 'Anti' but knows it wasn't anywhere as successful as her previous albums. "She sat down with management and decided she needs to go back to what people love."

The Chainsmokers release single per month until December

After The Chainsmokers presented their 2018 release strategy to their record label last fall, the plan was so complicated that Columbia Records vp sales Joe Gallo had to buy a new dry-erase board. Columbia’s team spent three weeks scribbling out the idea -- a single will come out every month on Spotify, Apple Music and the rest, atop a new EP containing each previous single.
“We wrote out a road map,” recalls Gallo. “We wanted to create what we’re calling a ‘waterfall.’ As we go with the second and third tracks, the waterfall keeps getting larger and larger.”
In January, The Chainsmokers put out “Sick Boy” as what appeared to be a standard single release; in February, “You Owe Me” arrived as a two-song bundle on streaming services with “Sick Boy” in the second slot; since the third single, “Everybody Hates Me,” dropped March 16, it has topped the three-song bundle. This cascading process will repeat until a 12-song album drops in December. Adam Alpert, CEO of the band’s longtime label, Columbia partner Disruptor Records, came up with what he calls the “building the album” strategy. “Every song will get a new boost in consumption,” he says.
The Chainsmokers’ plan is an elaborate case in an industry-wide lab experiment on how best to rethink the standard single-single-album release playbook of the CD era. In recent years, pop stars have taken a range of new approaches, from Beyoncé's surprise self-titled album to Kanye West’s edit-as-you-go The Life of Pabloto Drake’s “playlist” album More Life. In 2017, Ed Sheeran, Camila Cabello and others put out two singles at the same time, and 21 Savage re-ordered his Issa Album for streaming services with the hit “Bank Account” at the top. Bebe Rexhaflooded streaming services with singles and EPs throughout 2017 without releasing an album at all, while two of the biggest singles of the past year -- Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow" and Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" -- still do not have an album home. It’s a sea change for the major labels, which were once so furious about Tom Petty releasing a free MP3 they made him remove it from the web.

Zara Larsson's new single in less than 2 months

CH: I wanted to talk about your next album. Will it be released this year? What can we expect?

Zara: I really hope so. It's not ready yet, but I want to release a single in a couple of months, maybe another one later, to see how people react. I really want to release something this year.
CH: Do you already know what this next single will be?

Zara: We have some really good songs that are just waiting to be released. We just have to pick one and that's so hard.
CH: And, about the album itself, what vibe do you want to express with it?

Zara: I remember tweeting a few months ago that would be superromantic because I'm in love and dating, but it's not. It's not romantic at all. There are definitely some cute love songs, but I do not think it will be so different from what you've heard from me. With luck, everything will be better. Melody, production, lyrics ... I feel like I just need to raise the level and keeps growing.

Lorde’s Tour “flopping” in US according to Sources

Has Lorde-mania started to lose some traction?
UK paper The Guardian seems to think so, calling the Kiwi star's US tour a "flop".
The 21-year-old Grammy nominated singer/songwriter started her highly anticipated North American tour on March 1 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, after smashing out her second world tour for Melodrama in Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.
But in Milwaukee, it seemed fans weren't as hungry for her sophomore album tour. For the 18,000-capacity arena, sources told The Guardian that only 6000 fans turned up.
A reviewer from Milwaukee Record said sections were closed off with seats covered in a thick black tape. Even in the open sections there were plenty of empty seats remaining, the reviewer wrote.
At her shows in Sacramento, Oakland, Kansas, Seattle and Denver over the next few weeks, Lorde's promoter AEG apparently closed off the upper tiers of the venue and gave out free upgrades.
Ticketmaster issued a discount code for premium seats, reducing the price from US$99 to $39, The Guardian reported.

The Greatest Showman may have missed out on an Oscar last week, but the popular soundtrack album has won another week at the top of the Official Albums Chart and in doing so matches Ed Sheeran’s Divide to clinch the second longest unbroken run at Number 1 of the last 20 years, the Official Charts Company can confirm.

The collection, which earned a nomination for Best Original Song for This Is Me, posts another strong sales week – 42,000 combined sales – to keep its place at the top for a ninth week. Adele’s 21 holds the longest consecutive reign at Number 1 of the past two decades, 21 logged an 11-week stint at the top in 2011.
