Marian Hill new single out in two weeks

What can fans expect from your next project?
Jeremy: I think you can see us pushing things forward. My beats are a little harder. And a little harder hitting. I think your vocals have evolved and there’s a lot more nuance and character going on.
Sam: I’ll take that, I’ll take that.
Jeremy: And it’s a tauter album, it’s ten songs. We were writing a lot, through when “Down” was happening and we hunkered down the summer after and I think we were able to just look at the 30 songs we were sitting on, and we were like “wait there are ten that are our favorites. That’s the album, we’re done.” These ten are all like we can’t pick favorites, it’s been impossible trying to pick a single. But the single is coming out in two weeks.

Lorde declined Grammys performance

It’s left many wondering why a Grammy Album of the Year nominee who has performed two out of the last three nights isn’t performing on the show. Sources close to the situation tell Variety that the Grammys approached Lorde about performing with other artists but not solo; another source said it was part a Tom Petty tribute (which would have been an odd fit for the New Zealand-born singer). Lorde declined. That source added that the other Album of the Year contenders — all of whom are male — were offered solo spots.

Mariah sued $3 million for lying about canceled shows

In the past couple of months, Mariah Carey has made headlines over a series of botched concerts and live shows. It seems her latest stint of botched concerts may cost her $3 million.

Concert promoter Fenix booked Carey to play two shows in Argentina and Chile, but she pulled out of both gigs at the last minute, TMZ reports. They are seeking at least $500,000 in damages for each of the missed shows.

Interestingly enough, Carey was the first person to take legal action against Fenix, alleging that the company did not pay her for the shows and that it ultimately damaged her brand. But according to the new court docs obtained by TMZ, Fenix already paid the singer nearly 75 percent of the $703,100 bill.

But the biggest claim arises from a tweet Carey posted in response to the news the shows were canceled. Carey wrote, “Devastated my shows in Chile, Argentina & Brazil had to be canceled. My fans deserve better than some of these promoters treated them.”

In their lawsuit, the promoters say Carey’s statement was “knowingly false and defamatory.” In the countersuit, Fenix states the real reason Mariah was a no-show was due to her low ticket sales at her three shows in Brazil.

For the defamation claim, they are seeking at least $2,000,000 in damages.

Enrique Iglesias sues Universal over streaming royalties

Latin superstar Enrique Iglesias is suing Universal Music Group in the US for an alleged “shortfall of millions of dollars” in streaming royalties. The lawsuit, filed in Miami today (Jan 24) relies on the accusation that Universal failed to specifically assign a royalty rate for streaming in two contracts with Iglesias: one signed in May 1999 with Interscope in tandem with Universal’s global company, plus an additional contract signed in May 2010. The initial contract covered English language and Spanish language albums, while the second tied Iglesias into albums containing both English and Spanish-language music. Iglesias’s legal team allege that, without a specifically contracted royalty rate, Universal should have been paying its client 50% of net receipts from services such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and Pandora. That’s because, says Team Iglesias, the record contracts state that a 50% royalty would be paid ‘for any type of use not specifically covered [here]’. However, Iglesias’s lawsuit notes that the rate agreed for both downloads and physical album sales was stipulated in the deals – at a significantly lower rate than 50%. “Despite Iglesias’ record-breaking success, Universal has refused to reciprocate and breached its contractual obligations to Iglesias,” reads the suit, which you can download in full here.

Camila Cabello Debuts at N.1 in USA

Camila Cabello debuts atop the Billboard 200 chart with her first solo effort, Camila, earning 119,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Jan. 18, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 65,000 were in traditional album sales. Cabello is the first woman in three years to hit No. 1 with her debut full-length album. Cabello is the first woman to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with her debut full-length album in three years – since Meghan Trainor’s Title (also on Epic) opened atop the list dated Jan. 31, 2015. (Trainor had a previous EP, also named Title, which reached No. 15.) If we count all initial chart appearances by women (including EPs), Cabello is the first woman to top the list with her first overall charting effort since Ariana Grande bowed at No. 1 with her first full-length album — and chart debut — Yours Truly on Sept. 21, 2013.

Lorde & Taylor won't appear/perform at the Grammys

KEN’S BIG CLOSE-UP: Timberlake’s halftime gig would keep him off the Grammy show in any case, but bad blood continues over his prior snub by the secret nominating committee. Now similar questions surround Ed Sheeran. Will said committee’s ill-considered decision to keep the ginger troubadour out of the top categories—to avoid trophy domination by yet another chart-topping, fair-skinned Brit and more charges of #GrammysSoWhite—mean Ed’s off the show as well? With the 1/28 airdate looming, producer Ken Ehrlich is deep into the heavy-lifting phase of assembling the CBS special. According to the latest scuttlebutt from inside the Grammy camp, neither Taylor Swift nor Lorde is among the slated performers at Madison Square Garden on Music’s Biggest Night. Swift, shut out by the committee, is declining to appear, these insiders say. But what explains Lorde’s exclusion? The Lava/Republic artist is nominated for Album of the Year and is the only female act in the category. Why on earth would this celebrated performer be kept off the Grammy stage? Lorde’s team is said to be extremely unhappy—do they have a shot at appealing the decision?

Cabello is now projecting to 85-95k in total activity and 48-53k in album sales. The P.T. The Greatest Showman' Soundtrack Spends Second Week at No. 1 on USA

The soundtrack to the musical drama film The Greatest Showman scores a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, as the set earned 104,000 equivalent album units (down 3 percent) in the week ending Jan. 11, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 70,000 were in traditional album sales (down 10 percent). The Greatest Showman is just the fifth soundtrack in the last 10 years to spend multiple weeks at No. 1. In the past 10 years, 21 soundtracks have hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and, of those, just five have netted multiple weeks atop the list: The Greatest Showman(two, so far), Suicide Squad: The Album (two, in 2016), Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (two, 2014), Frozen (13, 2014) and Glee: The Music, Volume 3 -- Showstoppers (two, 2010). The last live action musical released in movie theaters to see its soundtrack notch more than a week at No. 1 was the Dreamgirls album, with two weeks in the penthouse back in 2007.
